Hikari is Matchaful's single-origin ceremonial matcha from Hattori Tea Farm, a fourth-generation family farm in Shizuoka that shades its tea with solar panels. It is first-harvest, USDA organic, stone-ground to order and third-party tested for radiation, heavy metals and over 700 pesticides, with tasting notes of walnut, lemon and butter. Reviewers are split: one long-time fan calls it smooth and perfect for lattes, while another found little sweetness or umami and sharp astringency for $1.16 a gram.

In the maker’s words
“A smooth and creamy palette with tasting notes of walnut, lemon, and butter. Robustly-bodied; our go-to for creative lattes and smoothies.”
How it scored
Cup score out of 10, weighted across five factors.
Fans call it smooth with just enough bitterness; critics found little sweetness or umami, sharp astringency or a grainy, dry finish, and a 2026 blind taster found it no better than a cheap culinary.
First-harvest, single-estate, organic and stone-ground to order in small batches.
$42 for 30 g (about $2.80 per 2 g serving) is premium pricing for a latte-oriented matcha.
Names the farm (Hattori Tea Farm), region and harvest, is USDA organic, and publishes third-party results for radiation, heavy metals and 700+ pesticides.
Well known through its NYC cafés and influencer coverage, but enthusiast reviews are mixed.

What people are saying
Verbatim from Reddit, forums and long-term owner write-ups — linked so you can read the full thread.
“Did I just pick a bad expensive ceremonial matcha (Matchaful, Hikari) and a good cheap culinary matcha (Matcha Love)? … Neither were bitter or had any off flavors. The ceremonial one was simply darker green.”
“I didn’t like it. It was grainy and left a dry aftertaste. I tried five times to see if it would grow on me. … I seen so many reviews saying they love it and it the only matcha they use.”
