A $199 espresso hand grinder with 8-micron external steps and 48 mm coated burrs; superb shots, but weak for pour-over.

The J-Ultra is 1Zpresso's espresso-focused hand grinder, pairing 48 mm coated burrs with an external adjustment ring that moves 8 microns per click, the finest step in the brand's lineup. It has a foldable handle, a magnetic twist-off catch cup holding 35–40 g, and ships with a carrying case, brush and blower. Reviewers rank its espresso among the best from any conical grinder; the trade-offs are 35–55 seconds of cranking per shot and fine steps you must track carefully.

Best for

  • Espresso drinkers who want top-tier grind quality without an electric grinder
  • Manual lever and travel espresso setups
  • Single-dosers who dial in light roasts

What we like

  • 8-micron external steps give extremely fine espresso control
  • Balanced, full-bodied, clean espresso in reviewer tests
  • Very low retention (about 0.1 g on an 18 g dose)
  • Folding handle, magnetic catch cup and carrying case for travel
  • Lighter and slimmer than the J-Max it replaced

Watch-outs

  • Manual grinding takes about 35–55 seconds per espresso dose
  • Fine steps make switching between roasts or brew methods easy to lose track of
  • Not great for pour-over: less focused, more watery cups than dedicated filter grinders
  • Occasional static clump at the outlet

How it scored

The breakdown.

8.5Great

Gear score out of 10, weighted across five factors.

  • Performance30%9.0

The Coffee Chronicler says that for a conical espresso grinder it is 'pretty much as good as it gets', and 9 Bar Benchmark measured tight run-to-run consistency in the espresso range.

  • Build & reliability20%8.6

Aluminum body, magnetic cup, folding handle and an included case feel premium, though the warranty is only one year.

  • Ease of use15%7.6

External 8-micron dial makes dialing precise, but a shot takes 35–55 seconds of cranking and the fine steps demand careful note-keeping.

  • Value20%8.4

$199 is far below electric grinders of similar espresso quality, yet 9 Bar Benchmark argues cheaper KINGrinder models deliver more per dollar.

  • Community love15%8.6

A widely recommended espresso hand grinder that Daryl Bueno notes is among the most used on the competition scene.

“In the cup, the flavor profile is sublime – beautifully balanced with a big body yet elegantly clean finish. For a conical burr grinder for espresso, it’s pretty much as good as it gets.”

“This is a double-edged sword, giving unparalleled adjustment precision but requiring you to keep much closer track of your settings, especially if switching between light and dark roasts.”
Asser ChristensenThe Coffee Chronicler · 2025-08
“The extra level of control on the J Ultra is nice, but not a complete necessity. Don't get me wrong, I fully recommend the J Ultra. I like the feel, folding handle, and lid design more than the K6. But factoring in performance to value, you're getting more for your money from the K6.”

FAQ

Good questions.

Is the J-Ultra good for pour-over?

It is built for espresso, and 1Zpresso lists it under espresso grinders. The Coffee Chronicler found it produces a less focused, more watery pour-over than dedicated filter grinders.

How fine is each click?

Each click on the external ring moves the burr 8 microns, the finest step in 1Zpresso's lineup (the J-Max it replaced was 8.8 microns).

How long does it take to grind an espresso dose?

9 Bar Benchmark timed about 35 seconds for 18 g, and The Coffee Chronicler reports 40–55 seconds for a 16–18 g shot. It needs less torque than the J-Max but grinds a bit slower per shot.

What's in the box?

The grinder, a cleaning brush, a cleaning blower and a 1Zpresso carrying case, backed by a one-year limited warranty.
