The $40 cult brewer: a forgiving, nearly indestructible press that makes a clean cup or espresso-style concentrate in two minutes.
The AeroPress Original is a polypropylene manual press that combines immersion, air pressure and paper micro-filtration to brew up to 10 oz of coffee, or up to three espresso-style shots, in about two minutes including cleanup. It's light enough to travel, tolerant of almost any grind, dose and steep time, and at $39.95 it is one of the best values in coffee gear. The trade-offs are that it brews one or two cups at a time, takes a hands-on routine, and won't make true espresso.

Watch-outs
How it scored
Gear score out of 10, weighted across five factors.
It brews a clean, full-flavored cup that reviewers call easier and more forgiving than pour-over, though its espresso-style shots are not true espresso and have little crema.
The simple polypropylene parts are hard to break, and one reviewer used theirs daily for 12 years with minimal wear. Replacement chambers, plungers and seals are sold separately, but some buyers prefer glass or steel versions to avoid plastic.
Brew and cleanup take about two minutes. You push out a puck of grounds and rinse, and almost any grind, dose or steep time works.
At $39.95, with cheap paper filters that some users rinse and reuse, it is among the best-value brewers available.
It has a cult following, with a World AeroPress Championship and a James Hoffmann series, and forum users call it fantastic, low-cost and close to foolproof.

What people are saying

“The AeroPress is of incredible value. You can make a range of delicious coffees in one, compact appliance. It's easy to use, but has a very specific brewing technique that you'll need to learn.”
“The reason it became so popular so quickly is that the coffee it produces is just so good.”
“I used (and still have) an Aeropress for years and it's simply fantastic. Low cost, almost zero maintenance, good results. Very similar output to an americano though lower on crema.”
“I much prefer v60 to what i can produce with my aeropress, and one benefit is no plastic.”

FAQ
Not quite. AeroPress says the Original can brew up to three espresso-style shots, but owners and reviewers stress it isn't true espresso. One Hacker News user describes the result as very similar to an Americano with less crema.
AeroPress lists a 10 oz capacity, enough for one or two cups. You can brew one 10 oz serving by pushing all the water through, or up to three shots of concentrate to dilute. The Original XL doubles that to 20 oz.
It uses Standard-size AeroPress paper micro-filters, and a pack comes in the box. Coffee Kev notes the paper filters can be rinsed and reused about 10–12 times, and AeroPress also sells a reusable stainless steel filter.
Yes. AeroPress says the BPA-free polypropylene parts are top-rack dishwasher safe, though most owners just rinse it after pushing out the grounds.
