The original 1933 stovetop moka pot: Italian-made aluminum that brews strong, espresso-style coffee on gas or electric stoves.
The Moka Express is Bialetti's octagonal aluminum stovetop brewer. Steam pressure in the lower chamber pushes water up through the grounds into the top chamber, making strong, espresso-style coffee in minutes with no filters, pods or power. The 6-cup size makes about 9.1 oz, roughly six 2 oz espresso-size servings. It's cheap, lasts for decades with occasional gasket changes, and is an icon of Italian home coffee. You do need to manage the heat to avoid bitterness, it needs an adapter plate for induction, and it should be rinsed rather than washed with soap or in the dishwasher.

Watch-outs
How it scored
Gear score out of 10, weighted across five factors.
Coffeeness rates it the best moka pot for its even heating and consistent pressure, but the result is strong espresso-style coffee rather than true espresso, and it turns bitter if overheated.
The simple aluminum pot routinely lasts decades with only gasket replacements, but it can't go on induction without an adapter, and Coffeeness found the 6-cup body and handle get very hot.
Fill, screw together and heat. Good results take attention to heat and timing, and cleanup means rinsing only, with no soap or dishwasher.
$59.99 for the 6-cup on Bialetti's US store (smaller sizes cost less) buys a filter-free brewer that lasts for years.
It has been a design icon since 1933, has its own James Hoffmann series and has fiercely loyal forum users, though some say even Nespresso beats it.

“Not if you have used the same bialetti moka pot for decades, only replacing the rubber seal once every year.”
“I've used Nespresso for ages (still do at my partner's house), and it beats a Bialetti any day, but it's not cheap.”

FAQ
Bialetti says moka 'cups' are espresso-size servings of about 2 oz, so the 6-cup pot brews about 9.1 oz (270 ml). If you want mug-size drinks, size up or dilute with hot water or milk.
Not by itself. Bialetti says the aluminum Moka Express works on gas and electric stovetops and on induction only with its induction plate adapter. Bialetti also makes separate induction-compatible models.
Bialetti recommends rinsing it with warm water after each use, with no soap or dishwasher. Swap the rubber gasket from time to time, as long-time owners do.
Tom's Coffee Corner recommends starting with pre-heated filtered water, dosing by simply filling the basket, grinding fresh, and using gentle heat. Overheating the water is what usually makes moka coffee bitter.
